3 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT JE AND HOW TO GET THE VACCINE

Are you traveling to India or Southeast Asia and wondering if you need the Japanese Encephalitis (JE) vaccine? Here are 3 things to know about Japanese Encephalitis and how to get the vaccine if you need it.

1. JAPANESE ENCEPHALITIS OCCURS IN A NUMBER OF COUNTRIES
JE is found primarily in India and SE Asia. See the map above. If you are traveling to one of these countries, you will need to determine if the JE vaccine is appropriate for you.
2. THE VACCINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR ALL US TRAVELERS TO THESE COUNTRIES
According to the CDC, JE vaccine is not recommended for travelers with a very low risk itinerary. What is a low risk itinerary? That is when a traveler is staying in an urban area for a short period of time (less than 1 month) or if travel is occurring outside a well-defined JE transmission season.
The vaccine is recommended for a high risk itinerary. This would include travel in rural settings, for longer than a month and/or during a JE transmission season.
3. IF YOU NEED THE VACCINE, HERE IS HOW TO GET IT IN WASHINGTON STATE:
- Get a prescription for it, preferably from a travel medicine expert. The brand name is Ixiaro.
- Determine where you can get the vaccine. A travel medicine expert can help you find it easily.
- Get the vaccine. It is a 2 dose series. The routine schedule is to get each dose 28 days apart. The accelerated schedule is to get each dose 7 days apart.
